Learning to Let Go: DIY Does Not Work Here

Greg Gagne |

Self-reliance is often a strength during working years. The people who get ahead are usually the ones who figure things out, do the work, and do not wait around for someone to help. It builds confidence. It builds capability. It also builds a habit that quietly costs the most in the next chapter.

The seventh key is about learning to let go of the things that no longer earn their place on your calendar.

The independence trap

Many high achievers struggle with what we call the independence trap. They mow their own lawns. They do their own taxes. They manage their own investments. They fix their own problems. They pride themselves on not needing anyone.

The problem is that doing it all yourself is not sustainable in a life you are intentionally choosing. Time becomes more valuable than money in this chapter. And every hour spent on a task you do not enjoy is an hour taken from something that actually matters to you.

The real cost of DIY everything

Time costs. Every hour spent on tasks you do not enjoy is an hour taken from something meaningful.

Quality costs. Professionals often save you time and money by doing the work correctly and efficiently. The lawn looks better. The taxes are filed correctly. The investments are managed by someone watching them every day instead of every quarter.

Opportunity costs. Time spent on maintenance is time not spent on relationships, learning, or contribution.

Stress costs. Managing everything yourself creates a constant background mental load. Things you have not done yet. Things you should be doing. Things you forgot.

Relationship costs. Never asking for help reduces connection and shared life. Other people want to be useful too. Letting them is part of the deal.

Building your support team

Delegation works best when you know who to call for what. A financial team to handle planning, taxes, and investments. A home and life management team for cleaning, maintenance, repairs, and the small surprises. A health and wellness team that includes a primary care physician, a specialist or two, and someone who pays attention to long term wellbeing.

You do not need all of these in place at once. The goal is to know who to call, and to have called them at least once before you actually need them.

The art of good delegation

Delegating well starts with clarity. Be specific about expectations and outcomes. Build systems that others can follow. A maintenance calendar. A list of preferred providers. Emergency contacts. A note about how you like things done.

Then let go of perfectionism. Things may not be done exactly as you would do them. Focus on outcomes, not process. If the lawn is mowed and looks good, does the pattern matter?

Practical examples

Patricia spent every weekend cleaning her house and doing yard work. She hired a cleaning service and a landscaper and now uses her weekends for travel and time with grandchildren. The money she spends on help, she says, is the best investment she makes.

Robert did his own taxes for years because he did not trust anyone to do them right. When his situation became more complex, he hired a CPA who saved him more than the fee and corrected several errors from prior years. He wishes, he says, that he had done it sooner.

Linda was overwhelmed coordinating her mother's care while managing her own household. She hired a geriatric care manager who coordinated doctors, services, and insurance. Having a professional handle the details, she said gave her back the emotional energy to spend quality time with her mom.

Two questions to sit with

  • Where in your life could letting go create more freedom?

  • What do you need to feel that you can trust the people you delegate to?

Self-reliance got you to this chapter. It does not have to define this chapter. The Choice Driven life is built on choice and choosing where to let go is one of the most powerful choices you can make.
